VE/ VJ tree dedication ceremony.
In 2020, Roydon Parish Council received a grant from the Norfolk Armed Forces Covenant charity for a small project to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE (Victory Europe) and VJ (Victory Japan) days in 1945. The Parish Council decided upon planting a Hornbeam tree, with a circular bench surrounding it, to be placed on Brewers Green using this grant.
Due to Covid restrictions, and other supply problems, it has not been possible until now to complete the project, and hold a short dedication ceremony. Consequently, after two years, this ceremony was able to be held on July 12th.
Representing Roydon Parish Council and the Brewers Green Management Committee, Paul Curson outlined how the project came about, and then reflected on what emotions might have been in people’s minds on those two days in 1945. He then introduced Leslie Burroughes, one of Roydon’s oldest residents, and an R.A.F. veteran, who had kindly agreed to unveil the commemorative plate on the bench. Mr Burroughes also reflected on what thoughts came to his mind when thinking back to VE day, before unveiling the plate and ceremonially watering the tree.
