Roydon Parish Council gave an oral presentation to the Planning Inspectorate examining National Grid’s proposal for a new line of 50-metre pylons between Norwich and Tilbury, during a hearing held today in Norwich.

The Council had previously submitted written objections to the scheme, but the presentation was an important opportunity to highlight the unique impact the proposal would have on Roydon. In our five-minute address, we emphasised that Roydon is the only village along the entire route that would be enclosed on three sides by pylons — a situation that National Grid’s current design completely overlooks. We also raised concerns that the proposal fails to follow established planning and design principles, including the Holford Rules, which are intended to minimise visual intrusion and protect the landscape.

Roydon was strongly represented at the hearings, with several residents also speaking passionately about the wider implications of the route — including its effects on the Waveney Valley, the natural environment, and the wellbeing of local people.
