Tree management at Poplars Pond, Brewers Green

 A number of volunteers from the Brewers Green Management Committee and local residents have undertaken tree management around Poplars Pond on Brewers Green. The purpose of this work is to expose the pond surface to additional light in order to provide a more suitable environment for the life within it, a policy endorsed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s local conservation advisor.

As a result of the work, log piles have been created by the pond to create suitable habitats for invertebrates. A lot of thin cuttings remain to be cleared, such material being suitable for use as bean poles, pea sticks or other garden structures, since most of the wood is willow. Residents are welcome to take any of this brash for their use before it is cleared up. One of our residents has taken some poles to create a rustic rose trellis! It should be emphasised that willow is not suitable for firewood since it burns with poor heat and spits a lot.

It is envisaged that the remaining clearance will take place within the next 2 to 3 weeks.
